Methodological Levels in Prenatal Psychology

20th Heidelberg Meeting, September 1st and 2nd, 2007

Recommended by the Federal Academy of Gynecologists

Accreditation by the Board of Physicians (applied)

It has been possible to acquire in very different methodological ways extensive insight into the relationship between prenatal and perinatal experiences and the course of later development, as well as the possibilities of therapeutic and prophylactic intervention. This great diversity of methods, however, makes communication especially with those colleagues in medicine, psychology and psychotherapy who are oriented to academic concepts of science more difficult.

We are dealing here essentially with five methodological levels:

  • quantitative measurement and statistical analysis
  • qualitative methodology
  • statements based on empathic insight into selfawareness and during changes in the therapeutic process
  • practical experience of midwives, obstetricians and others
  • cultural psychological comparison

Meanwhile, beyond these levels there is a scientific discussion of methodology which starts from a more basic level thus overcoming possible polarisation. The development in natural sciences, particularly in physics, has produced the result that statements are fundamentally possible only with reference to the methods used (e.g. waves - particles). Furthermore, taking into account the diversity of factors that are involved in developmental processes shows that linear-causal statements with clear assignment of cause and effect have limited validity. Here modern developments of non-linear methods are gaining in importance.

The conference is intended to present this topic as a continuation of the methodology conference in Sardinia in 2000; the speakers will present a selection of fields of work and so provide room for discussion. Here they are dealing with central topics such as:

  • The relationship between prenatal and perinatal pressures (and later dysfunction as well as the development of resilience);
  • the effectiveness of therapeutic intervention at verbal and preverbal levels.

Of special importance for the evaluation of statements at the different levels of methodology is the consolidation of the interdisciplinary dialogue between all those involved.
